Sun International reports strong H1 performance with SunBet growth and land-based recovery
Sun International's SunBet online platform delivered 35.5% revenue growth in H1 2024, outpacing South Africa's online market, while the company's land-based casinos returned to growth after three years of decline. The company is pursuing market share expansion, product improvements, and potential international growth across Africa.
Sun International has reported a robust first-half performance with its SunBet online gambling platform leading the charge, posting a 35.5% year-on-year revenue increase to R1.18 billion ($73.6 million). This growth significantly outpaced South Africa's overall online gambling market expansion of 19% during the same period, demonstrating SunBet's accelerating momentum in the competitive digital space. The online segment's strong performance contributed to a 7.4% increase in Sun International's group income to R6.58 billion for H1 when excluding the Table Bay Hotel operation, which the company manages under an agreement with IHG.
Strategic market share objectives
During Sun International's Capital Markets Day in March, the company set ambitious targets to double SunBet's share of South Africa's online gambling market from its current 4.5% position. While the H1 earnings release didn't provide an updated market share figure, CEO Anthony Bengtsson reaffirmed the company's commitment to product development as the cornerstone of its expansion strategy during Monday's earnings call. The recent launch of a new user interface in both South Africa and Botswana represents part of this ongoing enhancement process, with more upgrades planned throughout the remainder of 2024. Bengtsson emphasized that the platform successfully handled increased volumes during the World Cup, proving its technical capabilities.
"We're very encouraged with the trajectory of that, but we're still not where we want to be," Bengtsson said during the earnings call. "A lot of the work, or some of the work has been done, and we have a lot more planned for the rest of the year. So bear with us. It is happening."
African expansion strategy
Sun International's growth strategy extends beyond South Africa's borders, with the company actively evaluating opportunities across multiple African markets. The May 2024 launch in Namibia through its partnership with platform provider Bede Gaming marked the latest step in this continental expansion, following SunBet's entry into Botswana earlier in the year. These moves align with the company's broader assessment of Zambia, Kenya and Ghana as potential future markets, as revealed during the Capital Markets Day presentation.
The company maintains a disciplined approach to expansion, with Bengtsson emphasizing that while numerous inorganic opportunities exist, Sun International maintains strict criteria for investment decisions. He specifically mentioned being open to consolidating minority interests and exploring opportunities both within South Africa and internationally. This cautious yet ambitious strategy reflects the company's dual focus on organic growth through product enhancement and selective inorganic expansion when compelling opportunities emerge.
Sports betting as growth catalyst
SunBet's current revenue mix presents a notable imbalance, with casino products dominating at 90% of business compared to just 10% from sports betting. This structure significantly underperforms the broader market norm where sportsbook typically accounts for 35%-40% of revenue. Bengtsson identified this gap as a major opportunity for improvement, noting that enhancing the sports betting product and operational focus could drive substantial upside. He described the World Cup as primarily a customer acquisition opportunity that also delivered strong turnover, with momentum continuing into H2 despite the typical July slowdown in sports activity.
The company's ability to handle increased volume during peak periods like the World Cup demonstrated the platform's technical capabilities and scalability. Bengtsson expressed confidence in the underlying improvement in sportsbook momentum as major football leagues resume play, positioning SunBet to capitalize on the market's natural sports betting inclination throughout the remainder of the year.
Land-based resurgence
After three consecutive years of decline, Sun International's land-based casino segment returned to growth with a 1.5% revenue increase to R3.42 billion. This recovery was accompanied by a 2.3% gain in market share, bringing the company's total share of South Africa's land-based casino market to 49%. While gross profit in this segment dipped slightly by 0.7% to R2 billion due to increased investment, the revenue growth suggests these expenditures are beginning to yield returns. Bengtsson highlighted that the operational improvements and market share gains appear sustainable, marking a successful change in the land-based business trajectory as outlined in March.
Omnichannel synergy
Bengtsson emphasized the increasingly interconnected nature of Sun International's land-based and digital operations, describing them as components of a single customer ecosystem. He noted that SunBet's success is partly attributable to the land-based business, and vice versa, with both operations continuously leveraging off one another. This integrated approach recognizes that while most land-based customers already engage in online gambling, many do so through competitors rather than SunBet. Closing this gap represents a significant opportunity to deepen customer relationships and capture more wallet share across both channels.
"We look increasingly at our business as one customer ecosystem or one customer platform, if you will," Bengtsson said. "I keep saying that SunBet probably wouldn't be where it is today without a land-based business, and a land-based business probably wouldn't be where it is today without SunBet."
Financial and operational outlook
Sun International's H1 performance demonstrates improving operational momentum across both digital and physical channels. The company expects recent investments in its land-based casinos to translate into enhanced operating leverage as the business continues to grow. With SunBet's rapid expansion and the land-based segment's return to growth, Sun International appears to be executing effectively against its strategic priorities of market share gains and product improvement.
The company's ability to simultaneously drive growth in its mature land-based operations while rapidly expanding its digital presence suggests successful navigation of the industry's ongoing digital transformation. As Sun International continues to refine its SunBet platform, address the sports betting opportunity, and explore expansion possibilities across Africa, the company appears well-positioned to maintain its positive momentum through the remainder of 2024 and beyond.
